Berlin Banter

20Aug09

It’s been quite some time since I’ve posted anything so I thought I’d leave you with a quick excuse and some promises of what’s to come – once I have a spare moment.

For the last couple of days I’ve been in Berlin and as it wasn’t my first time visiting the city I had high hopes for the sartorial splendor I would encounter there – and the impending blog inspiration! I was of course not disappointed, if you haven’t been before, Berlin is a fantastic city and full of fashionistas.

Unfortunately my camera broke while I was bored and fiddling with it in the German equivalent of The Department for Work and Pensions – don’t ask what I was doing there! Needless to say I was unable to gather much pictorial evidence of the wonders on offer. I do however have a few images locked away on that ex-camera of mine, so expect some Berlin style posts winging there way to this blog as soon as I can figure out how to wrestle them on to my computer…

HappySpotterIt’s been a long while since I’ve been Happy Spotting around town so when I booked my ticket for the Field Day Festival in Victoria Park a couple of weeks ago, I thought to myself what better excuse to take pictures of stylish strangers again. It’s a strange past-time I know, but Hackney of all places was going to offer up the best if not the most daring in the fashion stakes.

Unfortunately the weather failed me. The day was a complete wash out and all those veritable ladies of Victoria Park were busy sheltering from the rain, as was I. Needless to say my picture-taking was put on the back-burner as I took to the vino to up my spirits. There were however a few moments of clarity as documented below…

Grove Road Gal
Grove Road Gal

I bumped in to this lovely-looking lady on my way down Grove Road. She had the unenviable task of handing out that Somerfield’s-bags-worth of leaflets for god knows what. I usually run past leafleters as otherwise my bag ends up littered with the buggers but her very impressive outfit stopped me in my tracks. No literally! I walked past at first but swiftly headed back to take this picture. I absolutely love the tailored harem pants, I picked up a pair myself recently and they do make one feel rather special. She pairs hers as I do mine, with a nice slouchy top and cardie. But I have to admit she pulls off relaxed tailoring far better than I. Effortless undone hair goes very well with the slung around scarf giving the impression she didn’t even have to try on this particular morning. Jealous? me?

DIY Fashion
DIY Fashion
Swap Shop
Mrs Bear’s Swap Shop
knitting club
knitting club

Twas not all doom and gloom at the festival. A small and innovative group of gals stole away from the wind and rain to have a nice chat and a knitting session. Among the other ventures in this little tent were a “swap shop”, a lesson in “DIY Fashion”, and a £1-a-pop vintage bundle table. This is exactly the right sort of attitude to take in this fragile financial climate and customising or making your own clothes is a great way to do your bit for the planet too. So “hear hear” ladies, get knitting!

Gal with a Goose
Gal with a Goose

I’m so disappointed this one didn’t come out very well at all. I spotted this lady while sheltering from the rain in a tent that seemed to be permanently sound-checking. This lady was a couple of feet away and I had to shove a couple of peeps out of the way just to get this blurry shot! Ah well, as you can see she is holding a goose which she “tea-leafed” from the photo booth around the corner. Just another way to get by in this tough economic climate! Her dress is positively “Provence” especially with that rustic curtain-tie belt. She hits the on-trend note with those Balmain-esque shoulders and cuts a mean figure in the process! Hoorah!

Gal Pal
Gal Pal

This here is ma wee friend, but I couldn’t resist taking a cheeky picture of her. She’s taken a rather beautiful dress and given it a new reason for being by teaming it with biker jacket and a pair of tough old boots. I happen to be obsessed with Dr Martens at the moment so was very jealous of her rather beautiful heeled River Island versions! They kept her dry all day while my silly old Primark pumps were soaking and covered in mud within ten minutes!

Night is closing in...
Night is closing in…

The night began to draw in and I was beginning to give up the ghost, when I happened upon not one but TWO stylish ladies. The 1940′s muse on the right makes me miss my fringe. Oh how I wish I had the hair for a little war-time chic curl! I must say she’s thought this outfit out down to the tee; from the polkadots to the pearls and she pulls it off with finesse! Stylish lady number two shows off her leggy assets in some bang on-trend colour-pop hotpants and edges up her look with a sheer lace top. That retro 80′s patchwork bag has to be my favourite spot of the day though!

It’s the end of the day and these two girls have somehow manged to still look composed – by this time my hair was stuck to my head and mud was working it’s dirty way up my legs! Round of applause, please, for keeping it together against all odds…

So Michael Fish and his band of merry Weathermen got their predictions completely wrong. That “barbecue summer” they were promising us doesn’t look too likely now and the festival season is in full swing.

So what’s a girl to do in order to look good and keep dry…

  • I think tip number one has to be layering. The more layers you bring, the more potential cover you have when the heavens decide to fall. A good cardie or coat is an obvious option but an oversized scarf will serve thee well in both the style stakes and in any potential precipitation.

  • Numero dos! Keep it light. It can still be pretty warm out even with all this rain and you don’t want to get your sweat on. I reckon jeans are a no-go, they take far too long to dry out so stick to leggings or even bare legs – after all skin dries pretty quick and as long as you slap on a bit of fake tan your pins should look good too!

  • Tip number three is sensible shoes. Don’t get me wrong I’m not your mum and I’m not saying you should wear a pair of Startrite’s I just ask that you wear ones with a substantial sole on. For a while now, wellies have become ubiquitous with the festival season but if you want to get the edge over the rest of the crowd – opt for a pair of chunky boots instead. I’m a big fan of the classic Dr. Marten but if these don’t float your boat why not give a biker boot a try. Small heels are fine but remember you don’t want to be stuck in the mud when it comes for the mad dash towards shelter.

  • The sun may well shine on you long enough for you to don your sunglasses.Pack your favourite pair of sunnies as they might fool your mind into thinking it’s actually summer even when it’s not (well it isn’t really is it?!?) – and if that doesn’t work they’ll hide your miserable wet face!
  • Mac’s aren’t the only way to keep dry and they can be a pain taking on and off – especially if like mine, your’s is an over-the-head jobby! Just pack an umbrella – that’ll do fine and if you’re worried about the state of your hair after a heavy shower, make sure to bring a hat too – that’ll cover your bonce AND look good.
  • An oversized bag is a must for shoving all those stripped-off layers into if you’re indeed lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the sun this summer.
  • My final tip sounds obvious but just in case you hadn’t thought of this one…Don’t wear a playsuit or an all-in-one…How on earth do you expect to manoeuvre that one off once stuck in the portaloos my dear?!?

The British Fashion Council have provided the first look at Fashion Week’s brand new pre-collections for early 2010. So far on their site are designs from Basso & Brook, Christopher Kane, Giles, Graeme Black, Jonathon Saunders, Richard Nicoll and Roksander Ilincic.

I’m particularly excited about the Erdem and Peter Jenson collections. There’s something of Henry Sellick’s style of stop-motion animation in the Erdem designs. The pale waif-like models with bird-nest hairstyles remind me of Coraline and the dull tones and whimsical prints only cement that image in my mind. As for Peter Jenson’s line, the photography alone is pretty exciting. The sketchy home-stead background and quirky use of props sets of the 50′s inspired pieces brilliantly. 50′s housewifes have never looked so glamorous with black bin bags in tow!

Fashion Week has been in the news for more pressing reasons recently, as Dian Von Furstenburg and Betsey Johnson ask why isn’t it open to the public. I have to say, I heartily agree. Fashion has always been one of Britain’s proudest exports and the fact that the general public can’t join in on one of it’s most exciting showcases is a shame. The British Fashion Council does indeed hold both trade and consumer events, but from one interested fashion blogger desperate to get a front seat (OK that’s a little ambitious!) I’d like to see more please…

I think I just found my new favourite label. Coutique is a ridiculously cute line of dresses on sale now at ASOS and in New Look’s boutique collection. I just picked up my 70′s inspired summer dress in the New Look sale for 20 British pounds! Each design comes with a matching headband, which at first I though was a bit overkill but after trying the whole ensemble on I was convinced. I tried to do a bit of digging around on the origins of Coutique but to no avail. I believe it is a Brighton-based label but having searched far and wide on the Internet I canny find anything on who, what, why and when this new style inspiration of mine started. Ah well, it shall remain a mystery but I just had to applaud Coutique’s use of of very simple design combined with fabulous prints!

Here are a few examples I could find online. Wear with good thick heels and the hairband for a cutesy-boo romantic summer vibe or mix with a leather jacket and shoe boots for more edgy look.

I’m absolutely obsessed with Rayban Clubmasters. I can’t stop looking for a bargain pair on Ebay but what I should come to terms with is that I’ll never bag myself a cheapo pair of Raybans. I must settle for less!

Wayfarers are apparently passé  and everyone worth their salt is wearing Clubmasters. I’m still hanging on to my Primarni versions but for the sake of balance I’d like to add a convincing Clubmaster ripoff to my collection too.

Fortunately there are some nice looking copies out there and for anyone else interested here they are:

A couple of months ago I had the great pleasure of being asked to take part in a photo shoot for my lovely hairdressers in Brighton. Being obsessed with dressing up and pretty fond of getting pampered this was pretty much a dream come true.

Having decided to take the plunge at the beginning of this year and get my long tresses cut off, I’m glad I stumbled upon Haircult in Brighton (it helps that it’s located round the corner from my work!). Without making this post sound too much like an advert, the guys at Haircult did a fantastic job (if i do say so myself!). Not long before my new discovery I had visited another salon in Brighton and had an awful experience, not naming names of course. The surly and disinterested hairdresser from this rather reputable chain gave me a side-burn on one side of my face, which as you can imagine looked rather odd. In case you’re wondering there’s not much one can do about a dodgy side-burn apart from wait for it to grow out….hmmm! So as I said, I was very happy to find a new salon who actually seemed excited about my cut, did what I asked of them and did it bloomin’ well! I’ve been going back ever since and am still extremely happy with their handy-work.

Right that said…back to my outing as a model! I don’t think I could say I was exactly a natural. I felt like a bit of a doughnut most of the time and had no idea what to do with myself but out of all the shots there are at least a few I think I can be proud of. Well, take a peek and see what you think…

We get roughed up a little

I must admit I’ve been rather slack of late. I have neglected my blog and there’s no excuse….

…well maybe just this once there is. I don’t know how I did it but I managed to save up the cash to take myself to the fabulous Greek island of Kefalonia (made famous by that wonderful book and not so wonderful film, Captain Correlli’s Mandolin – cue Nicholas Cage as an Italian and Penelope Cruz as a Greek – shockingly awful accents ensue!)

As it is the season to be-beside-the-seaside I thought I’d gather some of my own holiday  style staples. I know there is already plenty of advice out there on the telly and in the magazines on what to wear – to the airport – by the pool – out on the town – so perhaps this is just a wee bit self-indulgent. With our short snap of good weather seemingly over for the time being, I’m just happy to be thinking of more luminous times. But perhaps some lucky lady out there is still struggling with the contents of her suitcase and as for the rest of us? Who knows the sun may well return to Blighty sooner than we think;  so here it is, my holiday style diary…

airport chic
To the airport…

Layers will make it easy for you to make the transition from the dreary British weather to the sunnier delights of your holiday destination. This season’s ‘boyfriend blazers’ are the perfect cover up. They’ll go with almost anything and light enough to keep you cool, this one’s from New Look and you can pick it up in many a colour for a bargainous £30! Wear with heels, city shorts and a slouchy top, tucked in – bound to get you a upgrade at the check-in desk!

Evening Accessories

Out on the town…

Clearly the maxi dress is the way to go this summer. To avoid feeling and looking mumsy it’s essential to accessorise to the max. Layer up lots of mismatched bangles and add a big belt to retain your shape under all that fabric. Maxi dresses are a great way to show off statement shoes, so whether they be flat gladiators or vertigo inducing wedges make sure they’re on the right side of glitzy. I got my maxi from TK Max for a measly £17, the dress was originally from French Connection and ties in with this seasons use of bold graphic prints. Bangles can be really expensive if you’re looking to wear plenty, so head to your budget stores. Primark and Peacocks are just as good as more high end shops if you rummage through their accessories department for long enough.

Pool Cool
On the beach…
Poolside Cover-up
Boho beach cover-up….

I have plenty of bikinis tucked away in my drawers from previous holidays, but there’s nothing like getting a brand new one to make a gal feel special when bearing all on the beach. This ‘birds of paradise’ style bikini from primark only set me back about a fiver and is bang on trend. Make sure to slap on the factor 40 to keep skin looking safe from the rays but if you’re looking for a break from the sun altogether cover up with something a little more comprehensive. This kaftan is perfect for a bit of a boho chick but you can always mix it up with something a little more edgy.

Leopard Bikini
By the pool…
Kiss Tour Vest
Poolside cover-up

If Boho ain’t your bag there’s no reason why you shouldn’t rock you look up a little with a trashy-look leopard print bikini and a band shirt. I got my Kiss vest from a mate’s vintage clothes stall but there are plenty of replicas on the high-street (Topshop has a particularly cool selection!). I say – go authentic – and check on Ebay for a genuine vintage tour t-shirt or vest of your favourite rock band (or just one with the coolest looking design!)

Yesterday Sarah Mower, the British Fashion Council’s first Ambassador for Emerging Talent, announced this year’s lucky recipients for the NEWGEN bursaries. The BFC launched NEWGEN in 1993 and previous winners of this prestigious prize have gone on to become some of Britain’s most inspiring designers, including Alexander McQueen, Matthew Williamson, Ann-Louise Roswald, Christopher Kane and Gareth Pugh.

My ones to watch from the class of 2009 are Louise Gray with her colourful embellished pieces, Danielle Scutt with her raunchy structured collection and Mary Katrantzou with her vintage perfume bottle inspired prints.

Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in the 1960s film version of Breakfast at Tiffanys
Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in the 1960′s film version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Anna Friel is to play the lead role in a  new stage version of the Truman Capote classic, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but as everyone will know this is not an easy role to fill….

Audrey Hepburn came to epitomise everybody’s favourite it-girl, Holly Golightly, in the 1960′s film and turned the role into a cultural style icon. Hepburn’s image has since reached almost deity proportions and her style has been emulated by fans of her classic ‘English Rose’ beauty.

Anna Friel as Holly Golightly in the new stage version of Breakfast at Tiffanys
Daily Mail shoot with Anna Friel as Holly Golightly in the new stage version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s

The stage version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s plans to go back to Capote’s novella as inspiration. The true Holly Golghtly was a far rougher diamond than the character portrayed by Hepburn in the film. Capote’s Golightly was more than just a good-time girl, she was an extraverted socialite with a mouth like a sewer. Friel is a more than competent actress with the ability to give this role a fresh new look, but it helps that she too possesses those oh-so English good looks that made Audrey famous. The recent shoot Friel did with the Daily Mail played on the actress’s similarities.

The film version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s starring Audrey Hepburn was set about 20 years later than Capote’s novel. So one startling difference between the two actresses’ will surely be their costumes. Anna Friels clothes and style are bound to reflect the original 1940′s wartime setting. The shows Director, Sean Mathias has said he hopes to make the production “an unashamedly glamorous evening of wit, style, tenderness and music”. So expect the costume design and the fashion world at large to play a major part in this production.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s isn’t the only Hepburn classic being put through the remake mill. Keira Knightly is set to play Eliza Doolittle in a new version of my favourite Audrey film, My Fair Lady. Clearly Hepburn’s timeless style just keeps on going; inspiring me to pull together some key Audrey classics.

The Sallis Benney Theatre was yesterday host to another Frock Me! vintage fair. The ladies of Brighton are never ones to disappoint and came out in their droves to sift through the venerable delights on offer. Matthew Adams who runs Frock Me! has been organising vintage fairs since the mid-90′s, bringing together the very best vintage dealers in the country.

At Frock Me! there’s something for everyone whether you’re looking for choice bargains or antique finery. I’m afraid on my budget the latter is ruled out but there was plenty here that caught my eye. One vendor in particular often has me drooling at the window of her wonderful boutique  on Sydney Street in the North Laine. Hope and Harlequin sell especially pretty things, from stunning evening-wear and wedding dresses to classic separates and unique accessories. It’s a wee bit out of my price range but the selection on offer is always worth it! Other Brighton based vendors included Natasha Bailie, who’s online boutique www.natashabailie.com is packed full of reasonably priced beauties. Check out her collection of 80′s power dresses – very on trend!

I think my favourite discovery of the day has to be jewellery designer, Silver Lining. Unbeknownst to me, I bought one of this lovely ladies’ necklaces about a month ago from Snoopers Paradise in Kensington Gardens. Whenever I wore this necklace I always received comments from envious friends who’d like one of their own. Until yesterday I was under the impression that I had found a fabulous unique necklace that everyone was jealous of. As Maria the lady behind the label was so lovely I’m glad to say I was wrong. Maria makes all the necklaces herself in her spare time and her stall was heaving with charming little necklaces, my new favourite being her tea set designs.

The next Frock Me! fair is on Sunday 17th May in Chelsea Town Hall – get yourself down there and have a rummage!

It’s taken me this long to add another Bog Standard post for a variety of reasons. Taking pictures of girls outfits in the ladies loos can be embarrassing. You’ve got to find a way of approaching someone without looking like a loon. Things get worse. When carrying out Operation:Bog Standard, one must also take part in the evening festivities so as not to look out of place. This means I often get a little tipsy in my search for street style gurus. This can lead to me having a bit too much fun, hence forgetting to take any pictures all together.

Alas, I have dug out a couple of pictures from a night out in Wimbledon with a couple of mates. I managed to get one picture that night. Feeling desperate i ended up taking more pictures of me and my friends. Ah well, at least it proves I’m willing to show off in the bogs too!

Katie here is wearing a fantastic floral number from Mango

The lovely Katie is wearing a fantastic floral number from Mango. She keeps her accessories simple to let the dress shine through. You can’t really see her shoes in this picture (this goes back to what i was saying about getting a bit too tipsy to take pictures) but they’re from New Look and do a great job of lengthening those pins. I did remember to ask Katie what would be on her iPod if i were to press play…but she couldn’t remember so told me to say Kings of Leon, “that’ll do nicely” I said!

My lovely friend Marina hugging a hand-dryer

My lovely friend Marina, pulling that rather sultry pose, is wearing a beautiful petrol blue dress from Topshop and a necklace from Topshop’s Unique collection. That little suit jacket from Hennes’ Pink Label is made all the more fabulous by accessorising it with that Lambswool stole from House of Fraser. Her belt and bangles are all from various vintage shops and the furry little evening bag can be found in House of Fraser.

oh dear!
It was all or nothing…the pose made me feel like less of a twat at the time!

Yep, that’s me in a Topshop dress that i seem to be surgically attached to at the moment. It can be worn as a top (as seen here) or in it’s full glory as a dress with leggings if you’re a pale lady like me, or bare legs if you’re lucky!! Worn with my favourite H&M skirt which can be paired with almost anything. And those shoes, another staple of mine, are from peacocks would you believe (£3 they were!). All brought together with a House of Fraser bag, some green tights from Primarni, oh and earrings from the market!

Claire Merry in her Star Trek inspired ensemble

Claire Merry in her Star Trek inspired ensemble

Last night Tierre Henry’s ex stepped out on to the red, err I mean blue, carpet of the premier of the new Star Trek film. As a bit of a self-confessed geek and a Trekkie myself I didn’t think Claire Merry’s outfit was all that crazy actually. Well, she did manage to combine a completely on-trend mix of body-con tailoring and futuristic style rather well. This look might not go down so well in your local Sainsbury’s but in the right context you have to admit she looks pretty damn hot.

Plenty of other celebrities seem to be taking to the Star Trek model. Lady Gaga is an obvious one, but both Kate Moss and the Girls Aloud ladies have recently been seen in eye-catching Trekkie ensembles. I say no one quite pulls it off like the originals Star Trek girls themselves and you just have to take a look at Borg beauty ‘Seven of Nine‘ as proof of that.

However there are ways to wear this look and not look like an extra from The Starship Enterprise (and we all know it’s the extras that get killed off first!). Bodycon can be a great way to show off natural curves just make sure you team it with the right underwear. There is no room for lumps and bumps in one of these babies! Take a look at some of the High Street’s toned down versions of Trekkie style…

Main square in Krakow's old town
Main square in Krakow’s old town

This week I got back from my mini-break to Poland – Krakow to be more specific! Just thought I’d say a little bit about the place for those of you that might not ever think of going. Poland has had a hard time historically (putting it lightly!) and only joined the EU in 2004 so you could be forgiven for perhaps not seeing it’s city-break potential.

It couldn’t be a better time to visit Poland with the depressing 1:1 ratio of the Euro against our measly pound. Happily you can get about 4.5 Polish Zloty’s  for each and every one of those precious Queen’s heads which is the equivalent of about half a pint – meaning you can dine out AND drown your credit crunch sorrows for just under a fiver.

There’s plenty to do when you get there, be it a day out at the nearby Salt Mines (more interesting than you’d think!) or a sobering trip to Auschwitz. I have to admit that a combination of the very cold weather and the temptation of the very good food on offer meant that I mostly stayed around the old town, drinking as much tea/coffee/beer/vodka (delete as appropriate) as was humanly possible in my 5 day trip. That doesn’t mean that I didn’t take in any of the cultural delights on offer.

Old Synagogue
Tempel Synagogue

I do love a good walking tour. It’s very difficult to experience a new city to the fullest without the benefit of a local showing you the best bits. So I decided to take a tour of the Jewish quarter, Kazimierz, and luckily for me and my friends we basically got the guide to ourselves so it was well worth the money. Inspired by my new found knowledge I proceeded to visit pretty much every synagogue in town. Which you don’t really need to do, if you tick off the Tempel Synagogue and the only remaining active synagogue, The Remuh, you’ll be happy enough! The churches are equally interesting and St Mary’s Basilica is particularly beautiful. Make sure to pay the extra pennies to be able to take pictures once inside, the photo police will catch you if you try and take a sneaky one without your official photographer’s sticker on your lapel!

Take in the views from Wawel hill or take a peek around the crypts and chambers of the castle

The sun shined on my walk up to the Wawel Castle, which made the view from the hill all the more uplifting. Poland’s pretty cold at this time of year, which has it’s charms but a bit of sunshine makes all the difference. I was all the more impressed when trying to capture a worthwhile snap of the fire-breathing dragon at the bottom of the hill, when a random local (possibly a bit of a madman) told me exactly where to stand to get the best picture. That summed up my experience with most of the locals: eager to help and extremely friendly (if not a little crazy but in a good way!)

These chaps are dotted around the Old Town - be sure to pick up some of their salty bread - it's very Polish!
These chaps are dotted around the Old Town – be sure to pick up some of their salty bread – it’s very Polish!

But a trip to Poland isn’t complete if you don’t do your best to take part in the cafe culture. I enjoyed plenty of coffees while looking out on to the main square. I even sat outside on one occasion to the bemusement of everyone around me (the sun shined and the snow stopped and a true brit never misses this sort of opportunity).

Most importantly I enjoyed my fair share of the different flavour vodkas that Poland has to offer. I had thought that my vodka drinking days were over after a couple of bad experiences with the stuff in my youth. However, it is true that there is just no beating the good stuff, as my Polish barman Maciek kindly pointed out. Just don’t mix it with too much beer, or like me you’ll wake up with quite the sore head!

If you have any time left to have a wander around the shops, you won’t be disapointed either. There is plenty of chunky knitwear to be had in the Cloth Hall of Market Square. I grabbed myself and my mum some amazings shawls. This is also the place to pick up a bit of fur, if you’re that way inclined, I say leave the fur and wrap up with a bit of sheep’s wool. Knits are in and as long as you avoid the aussie merino stuff – it’s guilt free!

Luckily for me I’m a bit of jet-setter at the moment! Just back from a trip to Ireland to visit family I’m only bloomin preparing for my next holiday to Poland. Not sure how I’ll afford all this but ‘you only live once’ and all that jazz!

Victoria Beckham in her typically vertigo-inducing high heels

Abnegated Follower of Fashion: Victoria Beckham in her typically vertigo-inducing high heels

Anyways while I was away I managed to steal a couple of hours away from the tea and cake marathon that was unfolding at my granny’s house to have a little shop around town. My mum is from Newry which is just over the border into Northern Ireland and it’s becoming a hot spot of shopping activity for all those from the South that want to put their Euros to good use. While they spent all their time clogging up Sainsbury’s car-park picking up grocery shaped bargains, me and my mum had a wander around the clothes shops. Mum isn’t a shopper although I think she finds my obsession with it quite interesting and doesn’t mind tagging along (if only for a laugh at what I might pick up).

Between the doors of Topshop, Dunnes, Primark and A:Wear, mum noticed something a little unnerving: “Why are all these shoes sky-scraping heels designed for men’s benefit?”I’ve never been able to pull off a pair of massive heels, mostly because I own a pair of baby giraffe legs combined with flat feet! But how any one else manages to walk in ‘them there heels’ I’ll never know. Mum had a point. Even as a child she had warned me of the dangers of wearing heels, and subsequently I was never allowed to wear them. Aside from giving you sore feet, ingrown toenails and bunions, wearing high heels can put your spine out of it’s natural alignment and can cause permanent shortening of your Achilles tendons. All so our legs and bums look nice for men-folk. Deary me!

Apart from wearing trainers (my favourites are my Reebok Freestyle High-tops) flat shoes and pumps are clearly the way to go, if you want to look good and be kind to your feet. Here’s a couple of gooduns that are in the shops at the moment…

The catwalk has spoken…

and this years trends have been lovingly transcribed on to the pages of all the magazines i love and follow religiously. But what’s a girl to do with nudes?

Being of Irish descent my Celtic skin just doesn’t wash when it comes to wearing the many hues between magnolia all the way through to peach. You’d think my dark hair would help but with the total lack of summer sun this season my complexion is looking more cold-fish than English-rose.

Apparently there is help at hand for even the biggest beige-a-phobe of us all. I’m told that starting with a nudey  pair of pumps is an easy way to start off. And I’ve had my eye on the Chanel inspired flats from River Island for quite some time so i don’t need much arm-twisting to convince me to go for those.

Bear Bangle from £8.00 from Peacocks

Coordinated Follower of Fashion: Bear Bangle £8.00 from Peacocks

Taking inspiration from that great fashion house from across the Channel, the other way to do nude is monochrome. Mix with black for a classic Chanel look.

If that still doesn’t float your boat, how about nude accessories? I just bought a lovely cream enamel bangle from Peacocks, would you believe it?? and in the same bargain-hunt I found myself a beige-feathery-beaded-fascinator from Primark for the princely sum of £1.50. At that price it couldn’t be easier to go nude!

Although nowadays I reside in the lovely city of Brighton & Hove, I’ll never forget ‘me roots’. Originating from South London I’ll always be a fan of all the gems hidden south of the River. I can rave about the curries of Tooting and the Guinness served in South Wimbledon till I’m blue in the face but what I really miss is Colliers Wood’s best kept secret. Merton Abbey Mills market is situated on the site of the old Priory which was demolished in the 16th century during the Reformation. You can still see some of the remains through fuzzy perspex windows in the subway underneath Merantun Way (our pet budgie ‘Twitty’ was also buried under this road in the late 80′s, but that’s a whole different story!) Merton Abbey is also the historic location of the old Watermills used in the production of William Morris’ silk patterns.

But all that history aside the market has suffered a bit in recent years due to over-development in the area. What was the site for a brilliant car-boot sale is now a Pizza Hut, a Pizza Hut, Kentucky-Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut (no seriously!). I am however happy to report that Merton Abbey Mills seems to back with avengance. After a little refurbishment, it is looking a pretty as ever! I couldn’t have been more pleased when i sat down for a spot of award-winning Caribbean cuisine last weekend and noticed the new Vintage shop opposite. Vintage Venue has a great selection of clothes, for men and woman, from the 1950′s – 1980′s. This place really is tucked away off the beaten track so you’re bound to find some really individual pieces at a reasonable price! oh and when you do go and check it out, make sure to stop at Ting N Ting and grab a bit of that award-winning grub – the ‘fix-up’ platter is amazing!

The fashion industry must find it challenging answering to the great kerfuffle that the economic world is in at the moment. It seems that on Day 2 of London Fashion Week the solution to all our problems was glamour.

Graeme Black
Celebrated Follower of Fashion: Graeme Black

Graeme Black set the tone with a collection that screamed sophistication. Big hair, floaty gowns and white luxurious fabrics moved towards sharp tailoring, ruched collars, touches of nudes and finally bursts of colour. Speaking backstage he said that in these difficult times strong, rich and glamourous looks would be the only way to attract customers. John Rocha continued the theme with a look-back to Tudor England. Inspired by the award-winning costume design of Alexandra Byrne for the movie Elizabeth – The Golden Age, Rocha’s talced faces, striking sillohettes and simple clean designs used added touches of embroidery and ruffles to bring in a bit of glitz here and there.

On Day 3 of proceedings, Betty Jackson showcased a pared-down look, perhaps a more conservative answer to the economic crisis. Rough and ready unfinished hems and thick grey wool were brightened up by lovely loose-fitting florals. I think she only went wrong on the baggy (Nora Batty style) tights!

PPQ of Mayfair, brainchild of Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker showcased a much more colourful collection. Bold blocks of clashing colours, clown-style frilly bits and quirky little sideways all brought a sense of fun. But some things went a little too pyjama set for my liking.

TWENTY8TWELVE by S.Miller

Sienna Miller and sibling closed the day on a classic note. The entire collection ticked the trend boxes and was altogether very wearable if not a bit uninspiring. Skinny legs covered with skinny jeans, billowy boho shirts and waistcoat combos and lots of layers. Boyfriend blazers, all-in-one suits, florals, sky-high heels etc…the list could go on (not a one-shoulder dress in sight – ha she missed one!)

Have a look at the daily catwalk reports on the official London Fashion Week site

I got my eyebrows threaded the other day and i just have to have a quick rave about it! Loads of people are going on about threading at the moment. I even saw a feature about it on This Morning (trying to convince Eamonn Holmes to have a go!) Plenty of salons offer the service and many will try to charge you an arm and a leg for the privilege. My mum and dad happen to leave near Tooting in South London and a mate recommended the Sajna salon on Upper Tooting Road. Offering an eyebrow overhaul for the modest sum of 3 British pounds! Bargain!!

I’ve never felt that tweezing hurt so i probably have a high tolerance of such things. Some people find threading a wee bit painful but it literally took a couple of seconds and you will not regret it. I’ve always had quite thin brows so never really understood getting anyone else to groom them for me. I pluck a few stray hairs here and few stray ones there and I’m done. Alas I am convert. Although it was only a subtle change my eyebrows are a much better shape so I implore you all to give it a go yourselves! Go in grab yourself a ticket (like the ones they used to give you in Clarks when you got your feet measured) and wait til your numbers called – can get a bit busy at the weekends but the queue moves quickly!

Congratulated Follower of Fashion: Vivienne Westwood

I’m a lover of Vivienne Westwood so I’m going to give her a special mention! Her new Red Label collection contained plenty of the traditional fabrics cut into modern styles that has made her famous.  Interviewed before the show, Westwood said her collection was inspired by schoolgirls ‘but funny’.  Jo wood played the part of sexy headmistress (and very well indeed) while Daisy Lowe and the like looked the epitomy of the rebellious teen. Tartan, plaid, wool and cotton all transformed in to funked up versions of very British uniforms. The school stripes and crests reminded us of the inspiration but the rest of the collection was less playful and very wearable.

25th London Fashion Week

Anticipated Followers of Fashion: 25th London Fashion Week

So it’s finally here, London Fashion week has arrived with a bang to celebrate it’s 25th year! The first day of proceedings sees old favorites meet young upstarts as Paul Costello is on the catwalk for the mornings kick-off and Central Saint Martin’s students close the day!

As I was never going to be there in the front row, I’ll be getting all my information from the horse’s mouth (aka the official website www.londonfashionweek.com)

With a real nod to 60′s fashion Costello set the tone with his simple shift dresses. Coupled either with a tweed box jacket or a flared coat. The most important ingredient to this retro look was the leg of course! They do say that in a recession the hem-line retreats above the knee and the proof is in the pudding! Watch his catwalk show here!

As for the newbies….watch out for David Koma who bagged the Harrods Design Award on the night

A nude Beth Ditto on the front cover of the first issue of Love magazine. Lucien Freud would be positively drooling over this one!

Consecrated Follower of Fashion: A nude Beth Ditto on the front cover of the first issue of Love magazine. Lucien Freud would be positively drooling over this one!

Katie Grand launches her new magazine, Love, today. I’ve already run out to get my copy (I’m not one of the cool people who got one in advance) and quite a weighty buy it is! £5 for 331 pages of what is tipped to be the girl-in-the-know’s style bible.

Ignoring all the ads that generally do litter high-end fashion magazines and what we have here is something different. Grand has gone for a nude image of Beth Ditto on the front cover of her coveted new title. A position that could have just have easily gone to the countless other women of the moment who adorn the pages of this issue. To name but a few, there’s Lilly Allen, Courtney Love, Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss and Pixie Geldof (the lesser annoying of the two sisters). All captured in some fantastically raw photography. Bored of everything “botoxed, lifted, sucked and dyed out of the women” Grand is quite obviously on the mission to mix things up a little. And as she says in her editor’s letter, “What, after all, is more real than Love?”.

I like the ideas behind this statement and I have faith in Grand as the advocate behind it all. It’s about time there was a revolution in the fashion industry and she might just be the women to do it. An interesting looking women herself, quirky looks and a little gap between her teeth she’s certainly not the polished image you expect to head Condé Nast’s glossy new project. It’s taken her a while to gain such cult fashoin status, first working on Dazed & Confused the on the magazine Pop. Love looks to be Katie’s biggest project yet, there’s only going to be two a year though….but i’m already sold!

We’ve all been on a night out and taken what we think will be a quick trip to the little girls room only to find yourself chatting away to some randomer you’ve just met. Well, Bog Standard is devoted to all those style tips that are exchanged within the walls of the ladies loos!

I’m a fan of a good ol’ cardie, especially with the brisk weather we’re having. This lovely young lady has thrown her cardie over a H&M top combined with her granny’s old skirt cut to size. You’ve got to love that for thrifty credit-crunch beating style! You might recognise those quilted monchrome shoes from old reliable, Primark. And what would be on her ipod if i pressed play? La Roux and Quicksand (ooh me too!)

Twas a little tipsy when i met this lovely lady so i must apologise for sticking her next to the tampon machine but that’s what bog standard is all about! I thought this outfit was very indie cool – and with her hair falling over her face a little I’m getting Brit Pop style vibes aka Justine Frishman. Take some grungy Converse shoes, a cute knitted jumper and a leg revealing short skirt from American Apparell and there you have it – effortless but hot! No brit pop on this ladies ipod, just a bit of Elvis Costello – Oliver’s Army!

Hobble Skirt

Discombobulated Follower of Fashion: "Hobble Skirt"

This month BBC4 showed an episode of a 1950s fashion series presented by Doris Langley Moore from the Museum of Costume at Eridge Castle, Sussex. Doris was a distinguished collector, designer and historian of costume and this episode sees her ask the question; Why are we such slaves to fashion?

Doris looks at examples of 18th, 19th and 20th century fashion and analyses them for their practical use. Her findings are typically in-keeping with 1950′s sensibilities. Over the centuries women have subjected themselves to “demented” hats, inhumane footwear and generally anything that is basically “unsuitable for any kind of work that requires physical activity”. A white glove, a dress with a back fastening or a hobble skirt all have one thing in common. They give the appearance that the wearer is above having to consider any issues of practicality. If their gloves dirty – they will be replaced. Someone else in the background to fasten their dress for them. And they don’t ever have to walk very far to have to worry about the restricted movement while wearing a tightly fitted skirt.

The reason women would wear these ridiculously impractical clothing was, according to Doris, to advertise their idleness. But as she says this is not as mad as it sounds. You may wear posh clothes but you may not actually be very posh at all. Fashion imitates the privileged few giving people the chance to dream for a day. It’s easy to laugh at trends of the past but are we any less demented when it comes to what we wear today? My dad often sings a song from the Emperor’s New Clothes when he sees me bound down the stairs in an outfit he obviously think I look ridiculous in. He’s probably right but it’s ok. Fashion is all about make-believe. And if ploughing all my efforts in to what I’m wearing makes me belive I am some sort of lady of leisure then that’s all good wih me!

Sense & Nonsense in Fashion is still showing on BBC iPlayer. Watch it quick before it goes!

For my first run-around town taking pictures of complete strangers, I headed to the most obvious of places to find examples of individual street style. I was back in London for the weekend and so camera in tow plus one friend for moral support I set off for Brick Lane – London’s mecca of vintage fashion. Unfortunately the miserable weather seemed to have cleared the streets but luckily I found at least a couple of style troopers who gallantly braved the cold.

Absolute Vintage girl
spotted this girl from across the street just before I dived into Absolute Vintage for a little gander

Love this layered look and I love that the leather jacket was her mum’s even more! Her bag is also a vintage number from a charity shop while her dress was from good old H&M. The scarf is from Urban Outfitters and she’s wearing a selection of bangles from all sorts of places that she couldn’t really remember Quite conveniently her shoes were from the shop in the background: Absolute Vintage.

Pressing play on this ladies ipod (if she had one that is) would definetely drag up something from 90′s American-indie band Pavement

Cafe 1001, Dray Walk
walked right in to this one as i stopped at my favourite place to get a good burger. Café 1001 on Dray walk is always brimming with the über stylish and today was no exception…

The glasses caught my eye but then i saw those shoes! I was oh so proud when she said her tights were from Dorothy Perkins but the rest of the outfit was thoroughly local: Shoes from charity shop, brilliant coat from Spitalfields Market and the scarf is from Rocket. Oh and those glasses have to get a special mention as they were only £24 from www.glassesdirect.co.uk – blooming bargain!

Again no ipod amoung this lady’s posessions, but she did tell me that the last gig she had been to was to see Afrikan Boy – yep that’s right of LIDL fame!

English twee style at it's best!
English twee style at it’s best!

Mixing different shades of tweed but pulling it all together with those red gloves and little fur hood with the red ribbon. I’m just sad i didn’t take a second picture with hood up! it was very cute! The broaches were a selection from a Russian Flea market and apart from her Gap socks she couldn’t quite remember where she had sourced all of her other gems! That basket just tops the whole thing off…i imagined that it belonged to a beautiful Princess Pashley bicycle! (a girl can dream even if they do cost an arm and a leg)

Having just come back from a trip to Russia – Tchaikovsky‘s classical themes were playing on her ipod! How very fitting!

It's obvious from the bag where I spotted this girl...Beyond Retro is definately the last place to grab a 'vintage' (cough-cough 'second hand') bargain!
It’s obvious from the bag where I spotted this girl…Beyond Retro is definitely the last place to grab a ‘vintage’ (cough-cough ‘second hand’) bargain!

This young lady and I both bagged ourselves some spoils from Beyond Retro – who could resist when it’s one of the only places (bar the Internet) that still sells vintage goods at a reasonable price! I never did ask her what she bought, I resisted the temptation to buy a short play-suit and instead purchased a lovely black sequined boob tube – very glam! I was however pleased to discover that chunky knit you can see peeping out of the bottom of her MaxMara coat was actually a Granny-made creation! Those socks were from the Harrods’ sale while the shoes were a local buy. Nice to see people supporting independent retailers : )

I think this has to be my spot of the day!

She’s wearing all her own designs here. From her green printed gabardine trench coat which is from her Spring/Summer 08 collection right down to her black skinnies. Take a peek at her website: www.maikkemekking.com

Maaike was also a very good sport and was brave enough to actually get out her ipod and press play for me – unfortunately no dolly parton – just some old tim blues by Billie Holiday – Any Old Time

I’ve always thought that the kind of music that someone listens to can give you more of an idea about a person’s real style. Or in my case it can be an embarrassing window in to how uncool a gal can be ( I ♥ Dolly Parton – ahem!)

Right that’s it, fed up of talking about things and desperately seeking to appear impulsive, I’ve gone for the chop! I wish I could say my inspiration was more Mia Farrow that Victoria Beckham, but I have to admit that Mrs Posh Spice herself has been looking pretty cool these days! Now that is something I didn’t think I’d ever admit….but with the pictures of her at New York Fashion Week back in September and those Armani ads I couldn’t stop thinking about her pixie do.

Ok, so I talked about it for a couple of months, but that’s good for me! Finally as New Year rolled in I felt my resolution should be to ‘just do’ and not think about it. So there we are, my before and after pictures are below….!
